Car to C+E (Class 1 / Artic)

If you’re 18 or older and already hold a full UK car licence, you can progress to a Category C+E (Class 1) licence by following our clear, structured process. We’ve made it easy to understand with our ‘Route to the Road’ flowchart, guiding you every step of the way.

✅ Eligibility Requirements

To obtain your Category C+E licence in the UK, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Hold a full UK car licence (Category B)

  • Pass a medical exam (D4 form completed by a doctor)

  • Apply for a provisional Category C+E licence (D2 form)

  • Pass the LGV theory test (multiple choice + hazard perception)

  • Complete the Driver CPC if you plan to drive professionally

Things to Consider Before Booking Your Car to C+E Course:

Job Opportunities:

Many employers prefer new drivers to start with Category C (rigid) vehicles before progressing to C+E. Rigid and articulated lorries handle very differently, so gaining real-world experience in a Cat C vehicle first can make the transition smoother.

Trailer Reversing Experience:

Reversing with a trailer is one of the most challenging parts of the C+E test. If you’re new to it, you may benefit from taking your 3a reversing and uncoupling/recoupling training and test separately from the 3b on-road driving element.

Training Time:

Your required training hours depend on your confidence, existing driving skills, and any prior trailer experience.

The Tests

To gain your Category C+E licence, you’ll need to pass:

  • Module 3a: Off-road exercises – reversing and uncoupling/recoupling

  • Module 3b: On-road driving test

Flexible Training Options with JLD

Unlike most training providers who only offer intensive courses covering both modules at once, JLD offers a more flexible approach:

  • Intensive Course: Complete 3a and 3b together in one continuous programme

  • Split Course: Pass your 3a test and certification first, then move on to your 3b training and test later

The split option allows you to focus on each stage separately — ideal if you’re new to trailer reversing or coupling procedures. It reduces pressure, builds confidence, and increases your overall chance of success.

Which Option is Best for You?

  • If you have trailer reversing experience: The intensive course may suit you best.

  • If you don’t it may be best to choose the split training option to master reversing first, then concentrate on your on-road driving skills.

3a Training Hours (Reverse & Uncouple/Recouple)

Training can be booked as:

  • Half days: 4 hours

  • Full days: 8 hours (including breaks)

All sessions are delivered 1-to-1 with an instructor. It’s always better to book a little extra time and feel fully confident than risk undertraining and needing additional lessons later.
