C1+E
The C1+E driving licence permits you to drive medium-sized goods vehicles that weigh between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. You are also allowed to tow a trailer that weighs more than 750kg, provided that the combined maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the vehicle and trailer does not exceed 12,000kg.
If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997, you do not automatically receive C1 or C1+E entitlements. To obtain a C1+E licence, you must:
Complete the D2 & D4 licence application forms to apply for provisional C1+E entitlement,
Pass the 1a -Multiple Choice & 1b – Hazard perception Theory Tests
Pass the 3a – Reverse & Un-couple / Re-Couple procedures
Pass the 3b – On Road Driving Test (you must pass the 3a before you can take the 3b)
Should you wish to drive for Hire & Reward then you will need to complete Initial CPC to gain a Driver Qualification Card (DQC). This requires you to pass the following:
Module 2 – CPC Case Study Theory Test
Module 4 – Practical Demonstration Test
If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997, you were likely granted C1 and C1+E licence categories automatically under what are known as "grandfather rights." However, your C1+E entitlement may include a 107 restriction, which limits the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer to 8,250kg.
To remove this restriction and gain the full C1+E entitlement, which allows a combined weight of up to 12,000kg, you must complete the same process as those who passed their car test on or after 1st January 1997.
Should you wish to drive for Hire & Reward then you have 2 options to gain your CPC Driver Qualification Card (DQC), you can do the Initial CPC as above or you can complete 35 hours (5 days) of Periodic CPC. The difference with the Periodic CPC is that it is attendance based only and there are no tests to pass.
