Category C (Class 2 / Rigid)
If you're over 18 and already hold a full UK car licence, you can gain a Category C licence (Class 2) by following a structured process.
Once qualified, you can drive rigid vehicles above 3.5 tonnes up to 32 tonnes, including delivery trucks, refuse lorries, and tippers. This licence offers strong job security and opportunities in logistics, construction, and public services. It can lead to further qualifications like the C+E licence and specialist roles such as ADR, HIAB, or transport management — making it a great foundation for a long-term driving career.
✅ Eligibility Requirements:
To gain your Category C licence in the UK, you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Hold a full UK car licence (Category B)
Pass a medical exam (D4 form completed by a doctor)
Apply for a provisional Category C licence (D2 form)
Pass the LGV theory test (multiple choice + hazard perception)
Complete Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) if driving professionally
🎯 Why Choose Category C?
Here are some compelling reasons:
High demand: Logistics, retail, construction, and public services all need qualified drivers.
Job security: The UK has a shortage of HGV drivers, making this a stable career.
Career flexibility: You can work locally, regionally, or nationally.
Good Pay: Potential to earn in the region of £35,000.00
Progression: It’s a stepping stone to a Category C+E (Class 1) licence for articulated lorries
FAQ’s
-
No — you don’t have to retake all of them.
The HGV theory test is made up of two separate parts:
Multiple Choice Test
Hazard Perception Test
You must pass both to get your theory test certificate, but you can take (and retake) them separately.
-
You’ll take your HGV theory tests at an official DVSA Theory Test Centre — the same type of centre used for car and motorcycle theory tests.
There are hundreds of centres across the UK, so you can usually find one close to home.
You can book both parts of your HGV theory test online through the official government website:
👉 www.gov.uk/book-theory-testWhen booking, make sure to choose the correct test type for your licence category — for example:

LGV Hazard Perception (Module 1b)
And, if you’re going for full Driver CPC: Module 2 (Case Studies)
