Upgrade from Category C to C+E –

Smarter, Stress-Free Training Options

Take your driving career to the next level by upgrading from a Category C (Class 2) licence to a Category C+E (Class 1) licence. This qualification opens the door to more driving opportunities, higher pay, and greater flexibility — with excellent long-term prospects across the UK logistics industry and beyond.

What’s Involved

To gain your Category C+E licence, you’ll need to pass two practical tests:

  • Module 3a: Off-road exercises – reversing and uncoupling/recoupling (Take a look at the Uncouple-Recouple procedure demonstrated by one of our very own JLD instructors - click here!)

  • Module 3b: On-road driving test

Intensive or Split Training – You Choose

Most training providers only offer intensive courses, where both modules are completed together. While this suits some learners, those who are new to trailer reversing or coupling and uncoupling often find the process more challenging — leaving less time to prepare for the 3b on-road test.

At JLD, we offer a more flexible approach:

🔹 Intensive Course

Complete both the 3a and 3b modules within the same training period – ideal for those with previous trailer experience.

🔹 Split Course

Start with your 3a training and test first, then move on to your 3b on-road training once you’ve built confidence.

This option helps reduce pressure, improve focus, and boost your overall success rate.

Which Option is Right for You?

Your reversing experience is the key factor in deciding which route to take:

  • Experienced with trailers?
Choose the intensive course to complete both modules together.

  • 🚛 New to trailer reversing?
Start with the split course — pass your 3a test first, then continue with 3b training once you’re confident.

We’ll guide you through every step to find the best path for your learning style and goals.

Training Hours

Training can be booked as:

  • Half days: 4 hours

  • Full days: 8 hours (including breaks)

All sessions are delivered one-to-one with an instructor. It’s always best to book a few extra hours to build confidence and ensure you’re fully prepared — rather than risk undertraining and needing to retake tests later.
