Category C Licence, also known as a rigid or class 2

This licence is required to drive rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and up to 32 tonnes.

You must be 18 years old or over to hold this licence.

Our standard Category C course is 5 days long with the DVSA test on the 5th day. The 5 day course is designed to teach the learner awareness and planning, speed on approach, correct road positioning, correct use of mirrors and signals, moving away safely and under control, respect for other road users, plus many more things that are required to drive a large vehicle.

At JLD we advise against doing the C1 (7.5 tonne) licence. The reason for this, is the 7.5 Tonne lorry has become almost extinct as a training vehicle. You will be required to do the same medical and theory tests, the course costs and the length are almost the same and the course will cover the same things that will be taught for the category C licence. Anyone from the age of 18 can go straight for the Category C. This will allow them to drive any rigid LGV up to a MAM of 32 tonnes, hence covering the 7.5 tonne and meaning no extra courses or money should you wish to drive larger vehicles in the future.

Once you have passed the Category C test your licence will automatically be upgraded with the C+E (Artic or Class 1) provisional entitlement.
