Trailer Towing Category B+E
The Law
If you passed your driving test before January 1997 then you will be entitled to drive with a trailer or caravan up to a combined weight of 8.25 tonnes MAM. If you passed your test after January 1997, you are only allowed to tow a trailer weighing less than 750Kg and providing that both trailer and towing vehicle combined weigh less than 3.5 tonnes. Should you tow a trailer or caravan, and you are not entitled to do so on your licence, you will not only be breaking the law, but your insurance will be invalid.
Our trailer towing courses are tailored to your needs. The course consists of practicing the disciplines needed to drive a car as per the DSA standards. The training includes the skills needed to safely tow and manoeuvre a trailer in a variety of different situations, for example town driving, country roads and dual carriageways. During the test the candidate will also be asked to demonstrate a reverse exercise, braking exercise and the uncoupling and recoupling of the trailer. The test itself will take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, of which a minimum of one hour will be driving with the examiner.
At JLD we have a dedicated off-road training area for the candidates to practice all the relevant exercises.
All of our instructors are DSA accredited and we only use modern vehicles. The training will take place on the actual test routes you will encounter on the day of your test so as to give you the best possible chance of success.
JLD offer free assessments to establish your correct course length.
